Doggie Of The Week

When we go up to Paso Robles, we stay with our friend Wendy Hoffman who runs the Central Coast Herding Dog Rescue

These dogs are amazing! I've been out in the open with like 20 or more of them and they all just calmly walk around and nudging up against me. Every once in a while one would lick my fingers as it walked by. It's like puppy heaven, but it's right there in Paso Robles.

Wendy has an amazing talent for taking dogs that were left and would otherwise be some place where we don't want to even imagine, putting them in an immaculately clean and loving pack environment, and turning them in to the most gentle housebroken pups in a matter of weeks.

She saves the lives of hundreds of these dogs by finding them loving families for adoption every year.

Here is the legal stuff so you know the CCHDR is legit...

Central Coast Herding Dog Rescue, is a a federally recognized 501(c)3 non-profit organization, under Rescue Alliance.
We are dedicated to finding great dogs, great homes.
As we are a non-profit, all of the work that goes into getting the dogs ready for adoption and the adoption process is performed by volunteers.

And now meet our pup of the week, Jason! (Not our bass player Jason Chesney, although he is up for adoption too.)

From Wendy...

A 2 yr old, very submissive and super sweet, beautiful Border Collie with no tail.
Jason is so puppy like! His teeth are gleaming white. I'm thinking he's a younger dog.
Totally outgoing. Jason loves life.

Jason is totally trustworthy. He's fantastic with kids and happy to see everyone. Loves to ride in the car and you can leave him without worry of any destruction.

Great on or off leash. He got to run free on his first pack walk. Loved running with the pack, drained all that pent up energy, and came trotting back to me, totally reasonable and calm. Loves his daily off leash walks. Jason comes when you call, every time. He hops right back into the van when it's time to go.

House broken and uses the dog door.  Jason is in and out at will. He loves to sleep on the dog beds inside, and hunkers down in straw filled dog-loos too. Jason can be left in the house and be trusted not to destroy a thing.

Fantastic with the pack, submissive to the smallest 10 lb pup to the 14 yr old grande dame here. He loves all other dogs and is wonderful.

We walk right past horses & cattle, off leash, on our daily pack runs. He hardly notices them. Jason can be calmly called back to me anytime I want him. I encourage them to run far and run fast across the unfenced acreage. Sometimes they look like a pin head, so far I can't yell. Jason does a quick U turn when he hears my coaches whistle blast. Perfect!

Jason will be a great family dog. Or Your best Buddy.
Neutered, current on vaccinations, and micro-chipped!
More photos.
Adoption fee is $250. A lot goes into these fosters to get them ready.

 For general questions, please email.

Thank you for reading about Jason, and thanks for considering rescue!

Also, it was great to be back at Pappy & Harriet's last weekend. We have some amazing shows coming up in the next couple months.

A note from Stephen Tegel : Kibitz Thursday with The Vacation, etc...

Thursday March 12th
Kibitz Room
, 421 N. Fairfax Blvd.
10pm with members of the Vacation, Drugstore Cowgirls, Johnny Travis, Jr. and many more.
It's like 2004 all over again.

A note from Steve Tegel regarding the show...

Dear Friends,
Answer the following 3 questions honestly:
1) Do you need some time away from the missus?
2) Is your boyfriend driving you crazy with all those YouTube videos?
3) Do you like drinking cheap beer and allowing your ear-holes to be pleasured by the sweet, sweet sounds of stringed wood-planks?
If you answered 'yes' to any of these questions, then "This Thursday Night At Th' Kibitz Room" is just the thing for you!
Get comfortable in one of our patented, patent-leather booths and unwind as one of our famous blue-haired old ladies serves you sauerkraut and swiss-cheese sandwiches.
Feel the passion and taste the bittersweet sting of top-notch, bottom-shelf bourbon as 'El Diablo' practices his craft behind the bar. (no craft beers available...sorry!)
Unleash your inner "spirit animal" and make your way to our newly remodeled dance floor (special shout-out to Rick's 4-On-The-Floor Floors!) where you'll grind away your sexual frustration with half a dozen of LA's sweatiest singles!
Ruminate in the mysterious sound-field created by Paul Chesne and the Paul Chesne Band as they summon up dark energies from the void!
And marvel at the accidental harmonies of The Kibitz Room All-Stars, featuring: Johnny Travis Jr., MEMBERS of The Vacation, MEMBERS of The Drugstore Cowgirls, Zach Steel, and other special guests!
If you're looking for a night to remember, go elsewhere...but if you've simply got nothing better to do and if you've already seen that 'Friends' episode 25 times, then "This Thursday Night At Th' Kibitz Room" is the right plan for you!
Admission is FREE, tell 'em Big Dan sent ya!

Hank Gathers

College basketball phenom Hank Gathers came to my dad's office for a check-up after he collapsed on the court on December 9, 1989.
The team of cardiologists found that he had an irregular heart beat.
They put him on medications. The medication slowed him down and he neglected to take it unless they lowered the dose.
After a few weeks of not being able to play and being slowed by the meds, he came back and he scored 48 points and grabbed 13 rebounds against Shaquille O'Neal in a nationally televised game when Shaq was at LSU.

Hank was only 6'8" 210 pounds, but he was one of the few players ever to lead the nation in both scoring and rebounding in the same season.
I remember a few months later, we were driving back from the horse races or one of my soccer games. On Coldwater Canyon. We heard on the radio that Hank had collapsed again on the court. My dad got angry and hit the steering wheel. He pulled over and called the hospital.
Hank was dead.
He was just a 23 year-old kid with so much promise. He dominated Shaq in a game. Not many people can say that. He dominated the entire NCAA for a season really. My dad said when they did tests on his fitness they had never seen anything like it and they see all the Lakers among many other athletes every year.
But it was 25 years ago on this day March 4, 1990, when we were driving down Coldwater Canyon listening to KNX 1070, we heard about it.
Later we found out, Hank had made a huge tomahawk alley-oop dunk while getting fouled. Before his free throw, he walked out to mid-court and collapsed. He died right there.
My dad said, "You know you would think I might get more used to it as I get older-- death. But I don't. I think I was much tougher when I was younger. It's much harder now. And this one is really painful." I was just as sad, but tried to be strong for my dad.

Rest in peace #44.
